COVID-19

Coronavirus updates – for Sports Centre customers

Update 20/11/2020

From Tuesday 24th November, the latest Scottish Government changes to local authority protection levels will come into effect. Midlothian and East Lothian will be downgraded from Level 3 to Level 2, while Edinburgh will remain in Level 3. Given that the University is located in East Lothian, we will fall into Level 2 restrictions.

The guidance set out by the Scottish Government states that people should not travel between local authorities other than for essential purposes such as work and education. This means that you should not visit the Centre if you reside in a Level 3 area.

We understand that this might be particularly frustrating for some our members. If this has an impact on you and your ability to use our Centre, please contact the Sports Reception to discuss your options relating to your membership. This can be done by emailing sportsreception@qmu.ac.uk or phoning 0131-474-0000 and asking for ‘Sports Reception’ when prompted.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you that have been using the Centre since we reopened on 31st August. Your compliance with our ‘new rules’ and procedures has helped the staff enormously, we really appreciate the effort you continue to make in supporting them.

Our current provision of services will remain as they are at the moment and will be reviewed after the next Government announcement. These will be posted via our social media channels.

Update 27/08/2020

We’ve missed you all over the last few months and we can’t wait to welcome you back. We are delighted to inform you that QMU Sports will be opening its doors again from the 31st August 2020.

Our Sports team have been working incredibly hard behind the scenes to create a safe and enjoyable environment where you can visit and workout.

In order to make the Centre as safe as possible, it has been necessary for us to make some changes to our facilities and how they operate. Our selection of changes have been guided by industry and Government experts, including, UK Active, the Scottish Government and Public Health Scotland. The changes also enable us to continue to comply with local government advice and guidelines in regards to personal hygiene and social distancing.

What we are doing to keep you safe:

• We’ll be cleaning and disinfecting our facilities with an enhanced cleaning process, using detergent and disinfectant to sanitize all gym equipment.
• We will have protective screens at our reception desk and will provide the Sports team with PPE.
• We will have a member of staff stationed in the Fitness Suite to help you with the new guidance and to answer any questions that you may have.
• We will be supplying disinfectant spray and disposable hand towels so that members can clean the equipment before and after use.
• There will be hand sanitizing stations available throughout the Centre.
• Selected equipment will be switched off, removed or taken out of use to maintain distancing and hygiene guidelines.

“The convenient location of QMU’s Sports Centre means that I can easily fit my gym sessions in around my busy work schedule during the day or in the evenings. It’s close to Musselburgh train station too, so I can be back home in Edinburgh in just a few minutes. The staff are really friendly and professional. They’re always on hand to offer personalised advice and tips on how to make the most of your gym sessions too.”
